MAP Violation
A MAP violation occurs when a retailer or reseller advertises a product below the minimum advertised price set out in a brand's policy. Because MAP governs advertised prices, a violation is assessed against what the listing displays rather than what the customer eventually pays, so a checkout discount or coupon that lands the final price lower is a different situation and often outside policy scope. Detection needs a matched product, a current advertised price and the applicable MAP for that market and period. Detection alone rarely settles anything, since a retailer can change the price within minutes of being contacted, which is why a violation record is only useful when captured with a timestamp, the seller identity and a stored view of the listing as it appeared. What a brand can do in response depends on the market, and the regional position is covered in the entry for MAP.
Why it matters
- Erodes pricing across a channel once one seller discounts, as compliant retailers face pressure to follow or lose the sale
- Frequently indicates an unauthorized or grey market seller rather than a policy misunderstanding by an approved partner
- Depends entirely on evidence, because a violation nobody documented is a claim rather than a finding
How it is used
- Continuous comparison of advertised prices against MAP by product, market and seller
- Severity assessment based on how far below policy the price sits and how long it persists
- Escalation workflows that move a case from detection through notification to resolution
A MAP violation and a low selling price are not the same finding. MAP restricts the advertised figure, so a retailer can sit at MAP publicly and still transact below it through cart-level discounting, and many policies treat those separately. Violations also get confused with price competition generally. A competitor pricing aggressively is market behaviour. A violation is a specific breach of a policy a seller agreed to, which is what makes it actionable at all.
