Buy Box
The buy box is the purchase option shown on a marketplace product page, holding the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons alongside the selected seller's offer. Amazon, where the term originated, now calls the chosen offer the Featured Offer and the surrounding page area the Offer Display, while buy box remains the working term across the industry. When several sellers list the same product, the marketplace decides which offer appears there using landed price, delivery speed, fulfilment reliability, stock availability and seller performance. Placement rotates as those conditions change, so a seller does not hold the buy box so much as keep qualifying for it.
Why it matters
- Concentrates most of the sales on a shared listing, so a loss produces a revenue drop with no other visible cause on the page
- Works as an early warning signal, since a loss usually traces back to a price move, a stockout or a fulfilment problem
- Changed structurally in July 2026, when Amazon began removing seller performance as a standalone eligibility gate and folded those metrics into a single ranking, with the rollout running through the end of 2026
How it is used
- Buy box ownership tracking by SKU and by retailer
- Loss investigation that links each event back to a price, stock or seller change
- Third-party and unauthorized seller monitoring on brand-owned listings
Buy box, Featured Offer and Offer Display describe the same thing at three different levels. Featured Offer is Amazon's name for the selected offer, Offer Display is the page area that contains it, and buy box is the older industry shorthand for both. Placement is also neither permanent nor exclusive. Amazon can rotate offers, feature more than one, or feature none and show a "See options" link instead.
